Although it was a home match for the NI team, we strayed over to the Republic and were rewarded by the stunning Donegal scenery and coastline. The teams stayed at the hotel at Rosapenna which was so convenient for much of the golf we played and we were all fed and wined well at the hotel. No suspects have been found for the setting off of the fire alarm at 1.30am on Sunday….some had only just gone to bed! The set up at Rosapenna is fantastic, there are two main courses, a short nine whole course, a chip and putt course and driving range. We played the Old Tom Morris and Sandy Hills. On the Monday we played at a real sea side golf course at Dunfanaghy where it was possible to put your ball on the beach ( the Captain speaks from experience). The LSGC started reasonably well but were then pegged back and eventually overtaken by a very good and strong NI team to lose 15/9.
The weather, which can be unpredictable on the Wild West coast, was kind to us and we all enjoyed three days of golf on great golf courses. Many thanks must go to Peter Conlan, who was aided by Gerry Johnson, for all the arrangements which made this match such a success. Pleased to report that the NI boys are all looking forward to Portugal next year.
