Captain’s Blog No:3 – July 2019 Golf Galore
July has been a busy month for golf with matches against Jersey at the Royal Jersey Golf Club and La Moye; the Brussels Bar in Liege; The Lutine GS at West Sussex; the Valuation Office at Hankley Common; the Magistrates GS at Nuneaton; and the Consulting Engineers GS at Ashridge.
It was also the month when we witnessed Shane Lowry win the Open Championship at Royal Portrush with an impressive -15, a 6 shot lead on second placed Tommy Fleetwood. Victory also came to Bernhard Langer in the Seniors Open at Royal Lytham. His excellent final round of 66 was refereed by none other than our very own Nigel law.
Over the years we have been blessed by the generosity of those who have donated some rather impressive trophies to acknowledge the winners of our matches. Although we have played our annual match against the Lutine GS for many years it has been “trophyless” – until this year. Thanks to Brian Pettifer who kindly donated a new trophy for the match to be known by popular acclaim on the day as the Cox/Pettifer trophy after the two men who started the fixture 35 years ago. The first picture below has the victorious Lutine captain holding the new trophy in the clubhouse at West Sussex. You will also see in the background the LSGC flag. On arrival at the club I was advised that they had no flag pole so, with the help of the Secretary, we used a little ingenuity and displayed it over the fireplace in the club dining room. The second picture shows two of our revered members, Brian and Philip Heyes, standing either side of the flag although on this occasion they are somewhat out of place ! I have to report that they both have dual membership and played for the opposition on this occasion. No wonder we lost !
We did however win our match against the Magistrates on what was the hottest day of the year (36 degrees +). The final picture shows the LSGC captain (yours truly!) receiving a rather handsome trophy from the captain of the Magistrates GS at Nuneaton.
August is a quieter month for golf fixtues as I know many of you are on holiday. Enjoy your travels.
Don’t forget we have our Autumn meeting on 23 September at Purdis Heath in Suffolk, the home club of our member, John Pulham. I hope to see you all then, if not before.
With warm regards
John Slater. Captain, LSGC
