2017 was the turn of the Law Society Golf Club to host the annual fixture against the Scottish Solicitors Golf Society. 12 solicitors from each country gathered on The Wirral to play at Caldy Golf Club and Royal Liverpool on 18th and 19th May. We were blessed with the most wonderful weather on both days and the golf courses were in excellent condition. The opening day at Caldy produced an extremely tight day`s play, with both the morning foursomes and afternoon four balls ending tied at 3 matches each. Dinner at a local Hoylake restaurant proved the ideal forum to discuss tactics for the final day`s exertions at Royal Liverpool (Hoylake).
The LSGC held the smallest advantage at 3.5 to 2.5 after the morning foursomes at Royal Liverpool and expectations were high for re-claiming the Golden Snail trophy. However, a spirited comeback in the afternoon four balls saw our Scottish guests produce some outstanding golf to level the match at 11.5 to 11.5, with one match still on the course. In that final rubber, Scotland`s Tony Currie produced a stunning gross 73 (including a birdie at the last hole), to seal overall victory by 12.5 to 11.5 and retain the trophy. This is one of the LSGC`s oldest fixtures and some of the participants have played in the match for many years. We now have a blend of new players, too and it remains a most popular and rewarding event.
